When can I claim compensation?

You can claim compensation for cancellation or long delay of a flight that takes off from or lands at an airport within the European Union, if the carrier is European, if the following conditions are met:
- The delay is more than three hours upon landing
- You were not notified of the cancellation at all (you learn about it at the airport) or you were notified less than 14 days before the date of the flight.
In these cases, the carrier may be released from liability if the cause of the problem is an extraordinary circumstance - most often meteorological complications (fog, thunderstorms, heavy snowfall, hurricane-force winds), but also other natural disasters such as volcanoes and fires that lead to the closure of airports.
