The city under which another city lies

Sofia is often the first encounter with Bulgaria. Don't rush to leave it.

This is a city where different eras stand side by side in an unusual way. Roman remains are displayed between metro stations and modern buildings, a 4th century Orthodox church is hidden in an inner courtyard, and Vitosha rises above the entire city.

A little history

Today's Sofia is the successor to ancient Serdica. The city was an important center during the Roman era, and parts of the ancient streets and buildings can still be seen in the very center.

During the following centuries, different cultures and religions met here, and after the Liberation, Sofia became the capital of modern Bulgaria.
